Y5 - This Week's Learning - Wk6

Welcome to our Year 5 Learning Space! WC: 11-05-20

Firstly, I'd like to say a HUGE thank you to you all for sending all your work in for me to see. It really cheered me up last week. :-)

I have been particularly impressed by the writing I have received so far. I am so proud of you all and how much effort you are still all putting into your writing. I'm pretty sure that your parents are impressed too. :-)

Unfortunately, we still can't be together again in school this week, I know it is difficult and you are all starting to miss school now but you are all doing amazingly well. I am missing you all lots and I hope to see you all very very soon but for now, I've put some more work on for you to complete.

As I have said during our calls, please do not put too pressure on yourselves to get everything completed. I have set plenty of work and I am not expecting you to do it all. Little and often is the key.

If you find any work too difficult, choose an alternative task. Also don't forget that you can also use the other resources you may find online, such as BBC Bitesize etc.

I have put together some activities that you an carry on with at home. I have also included some work on Purple Mash this week too. You will also find lots of activities and resources in the 'Resources for All' tab too.

Please remember to write the date and WALT or title of each activity at the top of the page and underline it with a ruler like you would in school. You should also make sure that your work is presented neatly.

Remember to make sure that you have some time to relax, exercise and to enjoy the fresh air.

Keep safe, be happy and keep smiling. :-)

READING PLUS

This week your Reading activities for home learning can all be found on Reading Plus.  Your parents have been sent a PING with a letter which has information how to access Reading Plus that also has your personal username and password on there.  When using Reading Plus, it is a good idea to either use headphones or find a quiet space to work where you can hear the information clearly.

Hopefully you managed to log in last week, so you know how to use it.  When you first go onto Reading Plus, you will complete an assessment activity which will help Reading Plus identify what reading skills you need to develop.  This assessment can take approximately 40 minutes - it can be done in one go or in smaller chunks (it will save where you are up to if you don't complete it all in one go and you can go back to it later).

Where possible, aim to spend 15-20 minutes each day on your Reading Plus so you can get through the range of activities that it provides for you.

**If you are struggling to access Reading Plus at home, please ask a grown up to email the office.

Writing

This week, I would like you to create a leaflet about how to stay safe, well and happy during the current lock-down.

Aswell as the practical things that you may be doing, such as washing hands and keeping social distancing, think about how the activities you have been doing with your families have helped you to keep smiling.
What have you been doing to keep in touch with your friends?
How have you ensured that you also have a healthy mind as well as a healthy body?
How have you managed to stay in a routine? Has this been easy/hard? What has helped you in particular?

I want you to think carefully about all the features that are needed for a leaflet; maybe taking a look at some examples before completing your own.

I have set this as a 'to do' on Purple Mash so that it can be submitted and I get to see your amazing work.

I hope you have lots of fun with this week's writing.

Spelling and Grammar

Remember to keep practising those Year 5/6 words for when we get back to school.

I love how creative you all are with your weekly spellings.

Maybe you can share your ideas with each other and give each other tips of what helps you?

Timetables

It's BEAT THE PARENT/SIBLING time again. I hope you found that you got quicker throughout the last week.
Can you beat last week's score I wonder?

Maths

This week, I would like you to have a go at completing some work on equivalent fractions.

I have included 2 tasks- one of which being adding and subtracting fractions as an OPTIONAL challenge.

I have also included a power point explaining how to find equivalent fractions. If you click on the time '4.22' on the first slide, it also loads a Youtube video should you need it.

Ongoing learning

Science

This half term, our Science unit is 'properties and changes in materials' so there will lots of investigations for you to complete.
Over the next couple of weeks, I would like you to choose ONE task from each week. You will find the resources that you may need detailed at the top of the week. I have also included a power point to support this week's task.

REMEMBER- to ALWAYS ask an adult before carrying out your investigations and to remain safe at ALL times.

Please feel free to take photographs of you carrying out your investigations. I can't wait to see them all.

Geography

Attached below is an overview of numerous activities that can be completed about what would have been our new Geography unit; North and South America. They have different levels of challenge and the children can choose which one they wish to complete.

Remember to put all work in your work books; complete with date and WALT.

RE

Carrying on from our unit about Pentecost, this week I would like you to think about what happened next.

Below is a link which will explain what happened to Saul when Jesus appeared to him.

Following the video, I would like you to think about how Saul (Paul) felt before and after he met Jesus. You can choose how you show this- it can be a poster or a piece of writing. Alternatively, you may wish to use Purple Mash as a way of showing what you have learnt from the parable.
