PSHE & RSE
At Winwick CE Primary School, we understand the importance of a broad and balanced curriculum and this includes the teaching of physical, social, health and well-being (including mental health).
In 2020, a new statutory PSHE & Relationships & Sex Education curriculum became statutory. This meant that all schools had to ensure that all children receive a broad and balanced PSHE curriculum that covers the following topics:
- Families and people who care for me
- Caring Friendships
- Respectful relationships
- Online relationships
- Being safe
- Mental Well-being
- Internet Safety & Harms
- Physical health and fitness
- Drugs, alcohol & tobacco
- Health and prevention
- Basic First Aid
- Changing adolescent body
At Winwick, we have worked hard to develop our curriculum and, as an Early Adopter school, we have been teaching the updated statutory curriculum since September 2019.
Below is a plan of the units we are teaching, along with our Relationships & Sex Education Policy, Equality Policy and the PSHE Association document we've got it covered.
We have also taken part in the 'Thrive' initiative. This is a pilot scheme that provides training and support to schools helping staff support children with their mental health when needed.
In addition to this, we also use the 'No Outsiders in Our School' Curriculum to teach our children about equality and human rights.
In September 2023, we introduced 'My Happy Mind', an NHS supported programme that was created for schools with a very simple mission: to give today’s children the skills to thrive in tomorrow’s world. Our programmes give children the preventative strategies, skills and tools they need to thrive in the modern world.

Red Nose Day
This year, to help raise money for Comic Relief our theme was 'doing something funny for money'. We held a Comedy Show which a child from each class was chosen to tell their best joke. A winner was then chosen by the crowd from EYFS/KS1 and KS2.

Children in Need
The children enjoyed raising money for Children in Need. This year as a school we decided to take part in our very own dance-a-thon! We all had a good boogie in the hall – even the staff!
We most importantly took the time to reflect on why we raise money for this charity and where and how the money we raise is used.
We raised £160.72!

Christmas Jumper Day
We had a lovely day wearing our Christmas Jumpers and all things Christmassy.
All of the children and staff looked fab and we raised a total of £175.00 for the charity 'Save the Children.'

Black History Month
To celebrate Black History Month this year, we decided to hold a Racial Equality Week where each class learnt about a different inspirational person from history.
EYFS – Barack Obama and a range of Black Authors.
Year 1 – Aretha Franklin.
Year 2 – Ruby Bridges.
Year 3 – Mary Seacole
Year 4 – Jesse Owens.
Year 5 – Katherine Johnson.
Year 6 – Paul Stephenson.
We decided to teach Black History in a cross-curricular way linking it to all our subjects including Science, English and Music. Have a look at the photos below to see what we did.
Jeans For Genes Day
On the 17th September we donned the denim and celebrated Jeans for Genes Day. This was to raise awareness and money for children and their families who are affected by a genetic disorder.

Anti-Bullying Week
This year's theme is United Against Bullying
This year, during anti-bullying week we have been learning about different ways we can help prevent bullying, what to do if we know someone is being bullied or see it happening and thinking about different ways we can support people who are affected by bullying.

Health and Hygiene Week
During health and hygiene week, we have been learning all about the different ways we can look after ourselves and keep healthy.
We learned about something different each day and how this can affect our health.
Monday: Handwashing, Cleanliness and Personal Hygiene
Tuesday: Road Safety
Wednesday: Sleep
Thursday: Oral Hygiene
Friday: Exercise and the outdoors.

Wellbeing Week
Wacky Hair Day
To celebrate everything we had learned during Wellbeing Week, we had a 'Wacky Hair' DAY. All members of the school community to could come into school with weird and wonderful hair styles to raise money for the charity SCOPE.
All together we raised £140.

This year, to help raise money for Comic Relief we held a whole school Talent show. Each year group held a mini competition in their classroom, where a finalist was picked and then in the afternoon a whole school show took place. It was so nice to come together as a school again, both the staff and the children had lots of fun.
We raised a total of £141.50!!

Children in Need
This year we celebrated Children in Need by getting our 'strictly on!' We had lots of fun and didn't stop dancing all day. The kids looked absolutely fantastic and seemed to enjoy every minute of it.
We raised a total of £250.43!
